4.2.6.3. Design World zone

The Design World zone has four regions for keyboard operation:
  • Area tabset bar
  • Toolbox
  • Pan / Zoom Control
  • Canvas / Drawing Area

In order to work with the Design World via the keyboard, the focus must be on the Canvas / Drawing Area.

Area tabset bar

Using the Tab and Shift + Tab key combinations, we can switch between visible tabs, starting from the active tab.
Tab - switch to the next tab from the active one.
Shift + Tab - switch to the previous tab from the active one.
Context menu key - opens the context menu to the active tab.

The following actions are provided in the Area tabset bar:
  • If we have more than one visible tab and the active tab is the first and we press Shift + Tab, the active tab becomes the last tab (wraparound behavior), and there is a rearrangement of all visible tabs.
  • After setting the active tab, the focus is set to the Canvas / Drawing Area.

Two keys have special behavior when working with tools:
  • Esc key - Cancels the creation or action of tools where the current tab turns red.
  • Shift key - Works only with object creation tools in the Drawing Area. With linear objects, holding down the Shift Key draws a line vertically or horizontally from the last applied point position to the position of the mouse cursor, depending on which the mouse is closer to. With the "Create Rectangle " tool, the Shift key converts the shape of the rectangle into a square.

Pan / Zoom Control

The Pan / Zoom Control allows you to move around the Drawing Area and resize the view (change zoom level).

Here is a list of keys that apply to the Drawing Area :
→ ( right arrow ) – pan the Drawing Area to the left.
← ( left arrow ) – pan the Drawing Area to the right.
↑ ( up arrow ) – pan the Drawing Area down.
↓ ( down arrow ) – pan the Drawing Area up.
          - ( minus, subtraction ) – increase the scale of the Drawing Area.
+ ( plus, add ) – reduce the scale of the Drawing Area.

Canvas / Drawing Area

After switching the focus to the Design World zone, the focus goes to the Canvas / Drawing Area. This means that all previous items in the list can be called up using the keyboard here and, if possible, applied to this field.

There are also some keystrokes used in this field:

  • If you hold down the Shift key and hold down the left mouse button and move through the Canvas / Drawing Area, there will be a frame from the starting point to the point of the mouse cursor. This frame causes multiple selection of the enclosed objects -- when you release the left mouse button and the Shift key, all objects that have been involved in this frame will be selected. And if you do the opposite (first release the Shift key, then the left mouse button), then only those objects that were in this frame will be selected, those objects that were part of this frame are not selected.

  • Also, by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on an object located in the Canvas / Drawing Area, the object is selected.
