Some objects in IRM support a special type of field called the Lifecycle Stage. A Lifecycle stage is used to track the user-level state of an object. There are different varieties of Lifecycle Stages to support different kinds of objects. It is possible for the IRM user to add additional Lifecycle Stages.
Equipment and other typed object instances support the "typed" variety of Lifecycle Stage. This variety of Lifecycle Stage supports the following stages by default:

Equipment Types and other Types support the "product" variety of Lifecycle Stage. This has nothing to do with individual Equipment, Cable, etc. instance objects but instead tracks the state of Equipment Types, Cable Types, etc. This variety of Lifecycle Stage supports the following stages by default:
1A - Approved for enterprise-wide use
1B - Approved for use, but not the enterprise standard
1C - Approved for enterprise; no formal help desk support
2A - Approved legacy product, authorized on a case-by-case basis
2B - Approved legacy product; newer versions are available and should be used
2C - Legacy product to be phased out
3A - Emerging technology, not yet supported
3B - Unsupported, but testing is in progress
4A - Banned from enterprise use; causes network or system conflicts
4B - Banned from enterprise use; no longer loaded, supported, or used
