4.3.13. Other objects

The following topics cover other types of objects in IRM that have not been covered in previous topics - Locations, Software and Block Shapes.  These objects are all relatively simple in that they have relatively few relationships with other objects.

Lets observe some of their basic features:

  • A Location object has its own Location Super Category and is also a Categorized Object.  Location objects are drawn in the Design World and in fact a Location object cannot exist outside of an Area (there are no Locations in spares, for example). The most common use of Location objects is to identify a named region or datum within space and provide extra information about that region or datum.

  • A Software object also has its own Super Category and a corresponding Type object (Software Type), but a Software object does not get drawn in the Design World. The main purpose of Software objects is to track and manage installed software products on Equipment instances.

  • Block Shapes are not Managed objects, but belong to a group of much simpler objects that do not have a Type or Category but can still be drawn in the Design World (decorative drawing objects).  As decorative drawing objects, Block Shapes do not have their own Super Category, but rather serve as somewhat of a helper object that enables different types of things to be represented in the Design World.  A Block Shape is an instance of a Block (it refers to a Block) and is used to visually represent a non-managed object in the Design World.

The following subtopics cover each of these object types in more detail.
