4.3.6.7. Replacing Cables

This option is used to replace the Cable Type of an existing cable instance with a different Cable type.

During this operation, IRM tries to preserve the Cable route and connections. In most cases the application automatically preserves the route.
In order to preserve the connections, the Plugs for the new Cable need to be compatible with the Ports that the old Cable was Plugged into (via the Jack Plug Compatibility feature) and the new Cable needs to have the same number of Plugs as the old Cable.

If the number of Plugs is different, or if the new Plugs aren't compatible with the Ports that the old Cable was plugged into, auto-reconnection is disabled and the user is shown a warning dialog indicating that connections will need to be reestablished.

Below is an example of the Replace Cable dialog, which shows a simple case of replacing a power Cable with another power Cable from the Recommended Cable class:

In this example, the Transfer Cable Connections option is checked, which will try to preserve the Cable connections of the original Cable. Upon clicking the Replace button at the bottom of the dialog, which gets activated when a Cable Type is selected in the Cable Category and Type tree on the left, another subdialog is opened:

This is a standard Power Overload warning dialog; please click on the link to find more details about the cases when this warning dialog occurs and what it represents.

In terms of the replacement operation, if Yes is clicked, the Power Overload dialog closes and the Cable is immediately replaced by the selected one.
