The Cabling Dashboard allows the user to identify cable counts and associated costs based upon the following options:
By Area within which its installed
By Application (e.g. inside vs. outside)
By the Cable's Lifecycle Stage.
By the cable's material i.e. copper or fiber.
By the Cable's system.
By the assigned department.
By the assigned security classification.
Because cumulative Cable cost is one of the primary outputs of the Cabling dashboard, it is useful to understand how IRM calculates the cost value for each Cable.
The Effective Length of a Cable is a key factor in determining its cost, with the following rules:
If the current Test Length value of the Cable is greater than 0, the Effective Length is set to this value.
If the current Test Length value is less than 0, the Effective Length is set to the Cable's Total Length value.
In other words, the Test Length is used if it is defined, otherwise the Total Length is used.
The Cable's Cost Per Foot field defaults to 0. Changes in the Cable's Effective Length trigger an update in the Cable's Cost, unless the user has manually set the Cable Cost value without specifying the Cable Cost Per Foot (explained below).
Changes in the Cable's Type Default Cost value also prompt an update in the Cable Cost, provided the user hasn't manually adjusted the Cable's Cost or Cost Per Foot values.
If the user has set the Cost Per Foot value, the Cable's Cost is calculated by multiplying the Cost Per Foot and Effective Length values.
If the user has not set the Cost Per Foot value but manually sets the Cable's "Cost" value, the Cable Cost remains unchanged until the user sets the Cable Cost Per Foot value.
If neither the Cable's Cost Per Foot nor Cable's Cost values have been set by the user, the Cable's Cost is computed from the Cost Basis and Default Cost fields in the Cable Type.
In addition, the Cable Cost value shown in the UI is updated immediately when Cable's Cost Per Foot is first set or changed, using the same computation (cost Per Foot * effective Length).
The above dashboard summaries the cost over all cables in the database, and breaks it down By Location, By lifecycle,By Systems, By Department, and By Security Classification.
