The first step of defining a new Space object is drawing it in the Design World. This is done by drawing a rectangle or other closed polygon around the objects that need to be a part of that Space, that is, that the Space needs to contain. IRM provides Rectangle and Line drawing tools that can be used for this purpose.
The simplest way to create a Space is to first draw a rectangle. Begin by clicking on the Create Rectangle Design World toolbox menu item:
which automatically changes the mouse cursor in the Design World to a crosshair, indicating a drawing mode enabled.
The rectangle can then be reshaped, moved around, or even deleted, without any complications, as it doesn't yet represent anything but a geometric shape.
However, opening its context menu shows an additional option that other geometric shapes don't have - the Create Space option:
Selecting it opens a pop-out dialog - Set Space Parameters, very similar to other "Create <object>" dialog.
The dialog shows several standard fields that can be defined for the new Space objects, such as the Name (only mandatory field), Occupied flag, Owners, etc. Most of these are standard or explained in the following topic, where they appear under Space Editor's General tab. After the Name and other fields are specified, the Save button is enabled and click on it closes the dialog and creates the new Space object.
Although Spaces are most commonly rectangular in shape, IRM supports the use of any closed polygon to define a Space; for example an "L" shape can be used.
