Cyber Impact

In IRM, Equipment and Software objects have a unique property that describes the importance of that object to business function and capability, including the negative effects that would result if the object was somehow compromised. This object property is referred to as the "impact" field and can be both set by the user and the application.

This property can be interpreted and used by customers to mean either:
  • "functional impact", i.e. how important this Equipment or Software is to business function or capability
  • "security impact", i.e. how bad the result is if this Equipment or Software is compromised

Equipment objects display two such properties in their editor dialog; each can have one of the following values: Lowest, Low, Moderate, High, Highest
  • the first one (Default Impact) can be set by the user
  • the second one (Impact)  is set by the application to the greater of the value set by the user and any value inherited from any associated Software, or child Equipment.  In other words, the Impact value propagates upwards in IRM's object containment hierarchy.

For example, if there is a chassis with the impact set to Low by the user and it contains a blade server with impact set to Medium (also by user) and that blade server has a Software object with impact set to High, then the resulting value for both the server and chassis Impact will be High.

In addition to these properties being displayed inside the Editor dialogs, IRM also provides a way to visualize impact in the Dependency View by displaying a small colored circle in the lower left of the Equipment box, following the color scheme key displayed in the lower left of the Dependency View drawing area:
